The trident was used by the Greek God Poseidon and the Roman God Neptune as a symbol of power. In mythology the trident was used to create water and cause earthquakes. The trident represents the ocean and is the national emblem of Barbados. Featured on the reverse of the one cent coin, the three points of the trident represent the principles of democracy,"government of, for and by the people." The genuine coin was minted from 1993 to 2007 and was designed by Philip Nathan. The bronze coin is secured in a gold tone bezel and hangs from a 24 inch gold tone rope chain with a lobster claw clasp. A Certificate of Authenticity is included.
