Canels Chewing Gum is a chiclet-style gum, but what does chiclet-style mean? Chewing gum brands made with the chiclet styling come in small, square pieces. The name of the chiclet comes from the Spanish word, ""chicle,"" which means ""chewing gum."" Chiclet-style chewing gum brands were first introduced in the year 1900 by Thomas Adams. An American scientist and inventor, Thomas Adams went on to become widely regarded as one of the founders of the chewing gum industry. Adams conceived the idea of mass producing chewing gums when he worked as a secretary for former Mexican leader, Antonio L pez de Santa Anna. Santa Anna often chewed a natural gum called chicle. At first, Adams had planned on using the chicle as a way to make rubber suitable for tires but was unable to do so. Instead, he used the natural gum to make the chewing gum, Chiclets.
